Class Description

This class is aimed at beginners and advanced Yogis alike who are looking to take their yoga practise to the next level. We will be exploring the transformation of grounded Vinyasa Yoga to a Flying Flow. Aerial Yoga uses a hammock to support traditional yoga postures (asanas) along with suspended moves allowing you to feel more space and expansion.

What Is Aerial Yoga?

The practise of Aerial Yoga involves strengthening and stabilising your core enabling you to go deeper within the moves in a much safer way. Suspended postures support your weight and the act of being upside down decompresses the spine to naturally realign muscles and joints. In standing balances, for example, the aid of a hammock creates extra support and stability for you to explore the posture whilst ensuring correct alignment. Aerial Yoga is a fantastic way to introduce yourself to the world of Aerial Arts and transform your Yoga practise from the floor to the air.

What To Wear

Wear comfy, stretchy clothing that does not restrict your movement. Close fitting items are ideal as baggy or flared bottoms and tops can get caught or tangled which can be a hazard to you and others so avoid these.

Please remove all jewellery and watches and tie long hair back.

 

 

 

 

The History of Aerial Yoga

Aerial Yoga was developed by acrobat and Circus performer Christopher Harrison around 10 years ago. Harrison was in a troupe named Antigravity and began using the hammock to stretch before shows. He realised its potential whilst experimenting with inversions noticing how dangling upside-down for one minute would decompress his spine allowing any discomfort to soon pass. These “zero-compression inversions” relieve pressure from the neck and spine increasing blood flow to the brain. The act of being upside down oxygenates the blood energising blood cells and creating feelings of bliss. Aerial/Antigravity Yoga has increased in popularity substantially since then and is an invigorating, strengthening, restorative practise.
